The Power of Reflection in Your Walk With God: Finding Peace and Purpose

Walking with Jesus and being led by the Spirit of God through the journey of life is an interesting experience.

Life is not always predictable.

There are seasons of rising and seasons of falling. There are moments when everything seems sweet and other times when we have to swallow the bitter pill of difficult circumstances.

The Christian journey is not always smooth.

However, one thing that can help us grow stronger and become more stable in our walk with God is reflection.

Reflection allows us to look back at what we have experienced, identify the lessons God was teaching us, and apply those lessons to the season ahead.

The Christian Journey Is Not Always Easy

Anyone who tells you that surrendering your life to Christ means everything will suddenly become easy is not telling you the whole truth.

Don't get me wrong—the benefits of knowing Christ cannot be compared with a life without Him.

But being a Christian does not mean that we will never experience difficult seasons.

There will be challenges.

There will be moments of waiting.

There will be disappointments.

There will be times when we don't understand what God is doing.

These difficult seasons can become important parts of our spiritual growth and maturity.

The question is:

Can you have peace even when life is difficult?

Yes, you can.

Reflection Can Bring Clarity During Difficult Times

One thing that has helped me during difficult seasons is taking time to reflect.

Reflection involves stepping back, spending time with God, examining what is happening, and asking Him questions.

Sometimes, we become anxious because we don't understand what we are experiencing.

But there is a unique peace that comes from understanding your season and knowing how God wants you to respond to it.

The situation may not change immediately, but your understanding can change.

And sometimes, that understanding is enough to give you the strength to keep moving.

Go Back to God's Word

When you are facing a difficult situation, study the Word of God concerning that particular area.

The Bible contains principles, promises, warnings, encouragement, and wisdom for the different situations we encounter in life.

Don't just read the Bible casually.

Ask yourself:

"Lord, what does Your Word say about what I am currently experiencing?"

Allow Scripture to guide your thoughts and actions.

Spend Time With God

Another important part of reflection is spending quiet time with God.

Pray.

Be still.

Listen.

Ask questions.

And keep a pen and notebook nearby.

Write down the thoughts, Scriptures, instructions, or insights that come to you during your quiet time.

You may not understand the significance of something immediately.

But months or even years later, you may look back and realize that God was preparing you for something.

Don't Forget What God Has Already Told You

Sometimes, the answer we are looking for is not a new revelation.

It may be something God already told us that we have forgotten.

This is one reason documenting your quiet times can be so valuable.

When you are confused, you can go back and review what you previously wrote.

You may discover that God already gave you direction concerning the situation.

You simply need to remember it.

Keep a Dream Journal

For those who believe God can communicate through dreams, keeping a dream journal can also be useful.

Write down significant dreams as soon as you wake up.

You may not understand them immediately.

Don't force an interpretation.

Simply document what you remember and seek God's wisdom concerning it.

Sometimes, something that seemed insignificant months ago can become clearer when viewed in the context of a later season.

From my own experience, going back through things I have documented during quiet times and even dreams from months earlier has sometimes helped me gain perspective when I felt confused about what was happening.

I then take everything back to the Holy Spirit for guidance and discernment.

The Situation May Remain the Same, But Your Perspective Can Change

One of the beautiful things about receiving clarity from God is that the situation does not necessarily have to change immediately for you to experience peace.

You may still be facing the same problem.

The circumstances may look exactly the same.

But something has changed within you.

You now understand the season differently.

You know what you need to do.

You have renewed confidence that God is working.

And that understanding can give you the strength to continue.

Sometimes, you simply need to know:

"God is still with me, and this season will not last forever."

Reflect on Your Past Lessons

Reflection is not only about remembering what God has said.

It is also about learning from your experiences.

Ask yourself:

  • What did I learn from my previous difficult season?
  • What mistakes did I make?
  • What would I do differently today?
  • What has God been teaching me?
  • What patterns do I need to recognize?
  • What instructions have I received that I have not yet followed?
  • How has God helped me in the past?

These questions can help you recognize patterns and avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Your past experiences can become valuable lessons for your future.

Reflection Helps Us Understand Romans 8:28

One of the Scriptures that becomes more meaningful when we reflect on our journey is Romans 8:28:

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

Sometimes, while we are going through a difficult situation, we cannot see how anything good could possibly come from it.

But reflection allows us to look back and see things we could not see while we were in the middle of the situation.

What looked like a delay may have been preparation.

What looked like a closed door may have protected us.

What looked like a setback may have redirected us.

What looked like a painful season may have developed something inside us that we needed for the next level.

This does not mean that every painful experience is good in itself.

Rather, it means that God can work through our experiences and bring about good according to His purpose.

Don't Allow Confusion to Make You Bitter

When people don't understand what is happening in their lives, they can become frustrated with God.

Some begin to question Him.

Others become bitter.

Some eventually abandon their faith and look for alternatives.

This is why spiritual reflection is so important.

Instead of immediately concluding that God has abandoned you, pause.

Pray.

Study the Word.

Review what God has previously shown you.

Examine the lessons from your past.

Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom.

Give yourself time to understand the season.

Reflexiones finales

Reflection is an important part of your walk with God.

It helps you recognize lessons from difficult seasons, remember what God has previously spoken to you, identify patterns, learn from past mistakes, and gain clarity about your present circumstances.

Don't be afraid to look back.

Your past is not only a collection of things that happened to you.

It can also be a source of wisdom for where God is taking you.

Take time to reflect.

Go back to your notes.

Study God's Word.

Review your prayers.

Write down what you are learning.

Seek the Holy Spirit for guidance.

And as you look back, you may discover that God was working in ways you could not see at the time.

There are deeper meanings to many of the things we experience in life. Sometimes, reflection is what helps us see them.

Walk with God.

Keep learning.

Keep reflecting.

And keep trusting Him.
