Humility Before God: Why Deeper Encounters with God Produce True Humility

One of the greatest virtues a Christian can develop is humility before God. Alongside patience, humility is essential if we want to live a life that pleases God and fulfills His purpose for us.

Unfortunately, humility is one of the most misunderstood virtues today.

Many people judge humility by outward appearance, but God looks much deeper—He looks at the heart.

What Does True Humility Mean?

People define humility in different ways.

Some people openly display pride. They constantly remind others of what they have done for them, saying things like, "If not for me, you wouldn't have..." They give generously, but only to gain recognition and praise. They forget that they came into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing.

There is another group who appear humble on the outside. They speak softly, keep to themselves, and avoid unnecessary attention. Yet deep within, pride controls their hearts. Their true character only becomes visible over time.

Then there are those who quietly serve others without seeking applause. They are content to remain behind the scenes. Many people only discover the extent of their kindness after they have passed away.

These are the people whose hearts reflect God's heart.

They understand the value of people, the temporary nature of earthly wealth, and the eternal rewards that God has prepared.

That is biblical humility.

Humility Is a Matter of the Heart

One important truth is that humble people do not walk around announcing that they are humble.

In fact, some may even appear reserved, firm, or misunderstood because of their personality. Yet those who know them closely—and most importantly, God—know the sincerity of their hearts.

The Bible reminds us that God does not judge as people do. While human beings focus on outward appearances, God examines the motives of the heart.

This is why true humility cannot be measured by appearances alone.

Human Nature Leans Toward Pride

Pride comes naturally to humanity.

Without God's transforming work, selfishness easily takes control.

Developing genuine humility requires walking closely with God and allowing Him to shape our hearts day by day.

Humility is not something we manufacture by ourselves; it is the fruit of a life surrendered to God.

Jesus Is the Perfect Example of Humility

Jesus Christ demonstrated perfect humility.

Many people imagine Jesus as someone who was always quiet and gentle.

While He was compassionate and full of love, He was also fearless in speaking the truth.

He confronted the Pharisees and Sadducees when necessary. He challenged religious hypocrisy and refused to compromise God's truth simply to keep the peace.

In fact, His boldness offended many people and eventually led to the religious leaders plotting His death.

This teaches us an important lesson:

Humility does not mean allowing people to walk over you.

It does not mean remaining silent when truth should be spoken.

Neither does it mean agreeing with the majority when they are wrong simply to avoid conflict.

Biblical humility combines love with courage, gentleness with conviction, and grace with truth.

Religion sometimes presents humility as weakness, but God's Word paints a very different picture.

Through Scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we learn that truly humble people can also stand firmly for what is right.

The More You Encounter God, the More Humble You Become

Over the years, I have experienced God in different ways and have also heard remarkable testimonies from believers who have encountered Him even more deeply.

Some have shared experiences of heavenly visions, seeing Jesus, or being supernaturally transported by God's power.

Whether one believes every testimony or not, one characteristic consistently stands out among those whose lives genuinely reflect deep intimacy with God:

Humility.

The closer people draw to God's holiness, the more they realize how completely dependent they are on Him.

His greatness reveals our smallness.

His holiness exposes our need for His grace.

The more access you have to God's presence, the less room there is for pride.

You begin to understand that apart from Him, you are only dust sustained by His mercy.

Desire More of God's Presence

We live in challenging times where many voices compete for our attention.

Now more than ever, believers should hunger for a deeper relationship with God.

The key is not to pursue spiritual experiences for their own sake but to pursue God Himself.

As we seek Him sincerely through His Word, prayer, worship, and obedience, He transforms our hearts.

And as He transforms our hearts, humility naturally grows.

True humility begins where no one else can see—in the heart.

Although humility is eventually revealed through our actions, outward actions alone are not enough. Some people become skilled at imitating humble behaviour while pride still rules within.

That is why only God can perfectly distinguish between genuine humility and a carefully maintained appearance.

May our desire never be to look humble before people, but to become humble before God.

Because the closer we draw to Him, the more we realize that every gift, every achievement, every opportunity, and every breath is only possible because of His grace.

Let us continually seek more of God's presence, allowing Him to shape us into people whose hearts reflect the humility of Christ.
