The Period of Transition: Trusting God When Life Doesn't Go as Planned

There are moments in life when everything seems to come to a standstill. Your plans don't work out, doors unexpectedly close, and the future becomes uncertain. These seasons can leave you feeling confused, frustrated, and even forgotten.

Yet, what if these difficult moments are not signs that God has abandoned you, but evidence that He is preparing you for something greater?

This is what I call the period of transition.

What Is the Period of Transition?

A transition is the period between where you are coming from and where God is taking you. It is the bridge between one season of life and another.

Transition can occur in different areas of life, including:

  • Career
  • Business
  • Relationships
  • Ministry
  • Education
  • Marriage
  • Crecimiento espiritual

Although transition often feels uncomfortable, understanding that you are in a temporary season can make the journey easier to endure.

Lizzy's Story

Lizzy was an exceptionally brilliant student. Throughout her academic life, she consistently ranked at the top of her class. Her parents were proud of her, her teachers admired her, and her classmates expected her to excel.

In her final year, she sat for an important examination that would determine whether she could proceed to the next level.

Everyone expected another outstanding result.

But something unexpected happened.

When the results were released, Lizzy had failed.

It was the first major academic failure of her life.

Her teachers were convinced there had been a mistake and requested that her scripts be remarked. After the review, however, the result remained unchanged.

People reacted differently.

Some sympathized with her.

Others secretly celebrated her downfall.

Lizzy herself was devastated.

She didn't know whether to cry, scream, blame herself, or simply give up.

To make matters worse, the examination could only be retaken after two years.

Two years felt like forever.

How would she watch all her classmates move ahead while she remained behind?

What would you have done if you were in Lizzy's position?

When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn

Many of us have experienced moments like Lizzy's.

Perhaps you lost a job.

Maybe your business failed.

You were rejected from a university.

A relationship ended.

A visa application was denied.

Or you have been praying for years without seeing the answers you hoped for.

When life suddenly moves in the opposite direction of your expectations, it is easy to believe that God has forgotten you.

But Scripture reminds us otherwise.

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." — Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

This verse is more than a comforting promise. It is an invitation to trust God even when His plans don't make sense.

If you are walking in obedience to Him, you can be confident that He is working behind the scenes—even when you cannot see it.

Common Reactions During Transition

Not everyone recognizes when they are in a transition season.

As a result, many respond in unhealthy ways.

Some react with:

  • Anger
  • Self-pity
  • Fear
  • Depression
  • Bitterness
  • Envy
  • Hopelessness

Others may spend endless hours fasting and praying while becoming discouraged because the situation doesn't change immediately.

Sadly, some begin looking for shortcuts.

They seek solutions from places that God never intended.

Beware of Wrong Alternatives

I remember a man who lost his wife and, shortly afterward, faced another major life challenge.

He was emotionally exhausted and desperate for help.

Many people offered encouragement and pointed him toward God.

However, others encouraged him to seek supernatural help from ungodly sources.

One well-known man, who was openly involved in occult practices, recommended that he visit someone who supposedly had spiritual powers to solve his problems.

When people are hurting, desperation can cloud their judgment.

If you ever find yourself in such a situation, run from every ungodly alternative.

Do not negotiate.

Do not experiment.

Do not believe that "just once" won't matter.

The enemy often disguises destruction as quick relief.

Remain rooted in Christ.

Lizzy Chose to Trust God

Lizzy decided to trust God despite her disappointment.

She waited.

She learned.

She grew.

Two years later, she retook the examination and continued her academic journey.

But the greatest miracle wasn't simply passing the exam.

Ten years later, as she reflected on her journey, she realized something remarkable.

Those two years had changed everything.

She had become the founder of an internationally recognized organization.

Ironically, none of it would have happened if life had gone according to her original plan.

During those two unexpected years, God developed qualities that academic success alone could never have produced.

She learned:

  • Resource management
  • Effective communication
  • Patience
  • Humility
  • Leadership
  • Emotional maturity

These became the very foundations upon which she later built her vision.

Sometimes God Is Building More Than Your Dream

Lizzy thought her greatest need was academic success.

God knew her greatest need was character.

Without patience, leadership becomes difficult.

Without humility, influence becomes dangerous.

Without wisdom, opportunities can be wasted.

Sometimes God delays the destination because He is preparing the traveler.

He is far more interested in who you become than how quickly you arrive.

His ways are higher than ours, and His timing is always perfect.

How to Maximize Your Transition Season

Instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?", consider asking:

  • What is God teaching me?
  • Which character traits is He developing?
  • What new skills should I learn?
  • How can I serve others during this season?
  • What opportunities am I overlooking because I am focused only on my delay?

Every transition contains lessons that become valuable in your next season.

Don't waste the waiting.

Reflexiones finales

Transition is rarely comfortable.

It often feels lonely, confusing, and unfair.

Yet some of God's greatest work happens in the hidden seasons that nobody celebrates.

Your delay is not necessarily a denial.

Your setback is not necessarily failure.

Your waiting season may simply be God's classroom.

If you remain faithful, trust His process, and continue walking with Him, you may one day look back and realize that what seemed like the worst chapter of your life became the foundation for your greatest testimony.

Remember:

God is never late. He is preparing you for what He has already prepared for you.
