God Is Good Despite the Darkness: Trusting God in a Dark World
Even in this dark world, God remains good and faithful.
The world around us may appear increasingly dark, but the character of God has not changed. He remains our Father, our protector, our refuge, and our source of light.
The Bible says:
“Have respect to the covenant; for the dark places of the earth are full of the haunts of cruelty.” — Psalm 74:20, NKJV
This Bible verse is quite deep, and we may not fully understand it until our spiritual senses become open to what is really happening around us.
Understanding the Darkness Around Us
It is not a mistake that we are in physical bodies that limit our ability to see into the spiritual realm. If this were not the case, many people would probably struggle to function properly on earth. A large percentage of people may not be able to cope with the reality of what is happening spiritually because of the fear it could create.
This is one reason why many people who are spiritually mature have access to deeper spiritual understanding and discernment.
This is not intended to scare you. Rather, it is meant to help you understand why God is good and why it is important to stay close to Him like never before.
As the world becomes darker, we need to understand where our security truly comes from.
Our security is not in people, possessions, systems, or even our ability to understand everything happening around us.
Our security is in God.
The World Around Us Is Changing
The neighbourhood where I grew up was once so bright and bubbling. People knew one another. Children played together, visited one another's homes, and grew up with a sense of community.
That is no longer the case in many places.
People do not even know who their neighbours are, let alone allow their children to freely play outside with others. We have become more cautious because, unfortunately, not everyone can be trusted.
Being kind to people used to come naturally. But today, some people have lost precious possessions and even their lives because of their kindness.
Yet, at the same time, the number of people who need kindness in this world has multiplied.
Consider an example.
You see a man suffering and in need of help, so you decide to employ him as a housekeeper. Later, you discover that he had a plan to kill you and take over your inheritance.
In such a situation, escaping the danger may actually be considered a lucky escape because some people do not get the opportunity to discover the plan against them before it is too late.
This is one reason why discernment is so important.
When Evil Can Hide Behind Familiar Faces
There was a time when it was shocking to hear stories of children killing their parents. Today, the stories of children using their parents for money rituals, and even parents doing the same to their children, can seem unbelievable.
In the past, it was sometimes easier to identify people who disliked you or wanted to harm you through diabolical means because they did not necessarily hide their attitudes.
Today, things can appear different.
Someone can present themselves as your best friend. They may rejoice with you when something good happens to you. They may celebrate your achievements and appear genuinely happy for you, while secretly working behind the scenes to sabotage what God is doing in your life.
They study you.
They learn your likes and dislikes. They understand your personality and what attracts you. They may even conform themselves to the kind of person you naturally like.
Before you know it, you have developed a close friendship with them.
This is why spiritual discernment is important.
It takes discernment to recognize those who are truly for you and those who are against you.
God Is Always Ahead of the Enemy
Although the enemy may appear to have upgraded his methods, God is always way ahead because He is in charge.
Do not allow the darkness around you to make you live in fear.
God is greater than anything that may come against you.
He owns everything. Nothing exists outside His ultimate authority. Therefore, the believer does not have to live in constant fear of the activities of the enemy.
God is good.
Abba has given us weapons with which we can overcome the enemy, and we are also hidden in Jesus Christ.
Our confidence is therefore not in ourselves.
Our confidence is in God.
We Have Spiritual Weapons
God has not left His children helpless in a dark world.
The Bible tells us that we have spiritual weapons. Ephesians 6:11 says:
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11, NKJV
The believer has been equipped to stand.
We have God's Word.
We have prayer.
We have faith.
We have the Holy Spirit.
We have the authority we have received through Christ.
We have the presence of God.
Therefore, although we recognize that darkness exists, we should never become obsessed with darkness.
Our focus should remain on God.
The Darker the World Becomes, the Brighter God's Children Should Shine
As the world continues to become darker, the light in the children of God should shine brighter and brighter.
Jesus said:
“You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14, NKJV
But for our light to shine, we need to understand what to do. We cannot simply wish for the light to shine.
We need to know God.
We need to know His Word.
We need to walk in obedience.
We need to develop spiritual discernment.
We need to learn how to pray.
We need to understand the spiritual weapons God has given us.
We need to remain close to Jesus Christ.
Understanding Your Spiritual Light
Having light is one thing. Knowing how to use that light is another.
When you understand your identity in Christ, know the authority you have through Him, and learn how to walk according to God's Word, the battles and darkness around your life can become much easier to navigate.
What once appeared overwhelming can become a walkover—not because the enemy is powerless, but because God is greater.
The goal is therefore not to become afraid of the darkness.
The goal is to become so established in Christ that darkness cannot overcome the light God has placed within you.
Stay Close to God
The darkness in the world should not make us run away from God. It should make us draw closer to Him.
We need God more than ever.
When you do not understand what is happening around you, trust Him.
When you cannot discern what people are planning, ask God for wisdom.
When the world becomes frightening, remember that God remains your refuge.
When you encounter darkness, remember that you carry the light of Christ.
And when the enemy appears to have upgraded his game, remember that God is never behind.
He is always ahead.
God is good despite the darkness.
He was good yesterday.
He is good today.
And He will remain good forever.
Therefore, do not fear.
Stay close to God.
Know His Word.
Develop spiritual discernment.
Use the weapons He has given you.
Remain hidden in Christ.
And allow your light to shine.
The world may become darker, but the light of God in His children will continue to shine.
